“One Step Ahead” was released by American soul singer Aretha Franklin in 1965. This sleeve features the Madison dance sequence from Jean-Luc Godard’s playful and energetic ‘Bande à part’ French New Wave film which was released a year previous to Franklin’s track. The Madison features a regular back-and-forth pattern interspersed with called steps, paralleling the highs and lows of a tumultuous romance. Besides both works exuding the effortless cool of their era, they also share a common restless energy, tinged with sentiment and melancholy.
